Kipchoge studied at Kaptel Secondary School but did not run seriously then. He ran two miles to school on a daily basis. He was raised by a single mother (a teacher), and only knew his father from pictures.

He met his trainer Sang (a former Olympic medalist in the steeplechase) in 2001 at the age of 16.
