President William Ruto has mourned celebrated Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima who died on Tuesday morning, aged 91.

The president on his social media platform eulogised the freedom fighter who was the only woman to be bestowed with the rank during the Mau Mau uprising.

The Head of State described her as a courageous, hardworking woman who served her community and sacrificed for the country with diligence from the frontline.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Marshall Muthoni Kirima, a powerful figure of broad influence who fought for our freedom,” Ruto eulogised.

"We honour her heroic contribution to the freedom and development of our country and pray to God that he grants the family strength at this painful time,” he added.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had earlier mourned the death of Muthoni, celebrating her as a gallant freedom fighter.

“We recall with pride and sheer admiration, her exploits in leading the land and freedom army after the capture of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi whom she served as his personal assistant, after he was betrayed by Collaborators,” Gachagua wrote in a tweet.

Muthoni was rushed to a hospital in Pangani on Monday after developing health complications. She was pronounced dead on arrival.
