Julius Malema's EFF party commends Kenya anti-Finance Bill protests

In a statement on Monday, EFF noted that they stand in solidarity with the Kenyan youth who have taken the streets to protest against the Bill which imposes 'unbearable' taxes on Kenyans.

While accusing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank of having a hand in the proposals, the party acknowledged that the Bill will further strain the cost of living and the nation's economy.

"The 2024 Finance Bill is the result of a recommendation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to the Kenyan government. This is, therefore, part of a broader problem faced by many developing nations under the yoke of the IMF and World Bank loans," read the statement in part.

"The IMF and World Bank have a notorious history of undermining the sovereignty of developing countries through their oppressive loan conditions, and treating African economies like lab rats for neoliberal templates."

Malema's party added that these international institutions are the reason behind the widespread poverty and social unrest in Africa to justify the establishment of U.S. military bases on the continent. 

To achieve economic freedom, EFF therefore noted that they fully support the protests in Kenya urging the protesters to not relent in their fight for economic justice.

They also urged the Kenyan government to desist from using violence during the peaceful protests and allow citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.

"The use of tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets against citizens exercising their right to protest is unacceptable," the party said.

"We urge the Kenyan government to stand down the police and respect the people's right to peaceful assembly. All those who have been arrested should be released immediately."

The protests started on June 17 and are set to gain momentum this week to mount pressure on Kenyan legislators to shoot down the Bill.

Many young people have however left nursing injuries and two have been left dead.
