In a region where water is a scarce commodity where communities often compete for the resource with wildlife, and where students lose valuable school time in search of water the Kitui Green Run is stepping in to help bridge that gap.
Notably, it will be the first-ever run of its kind to be held in a dry region, highlighting the unique environmental challenges facing Kitui County.
The run will feature three race categories: a 21-kilometre half marathon, a 10-kilometre race, and a 5-kilometre fun run. Participants will compete across a mixed route combining both tarmac and off-road terrain.
Green Africa is the lead organizer, partnering with the Kitui County Government and Athletics Kenya to deliver the event.
Dubbed “Running for Rain,” the initiative seeks to educate communities on the importance of water harvesting, especially in arid and semi-arid areas like Kitui.
Run Chair Julia Kalkwe says the event is designed to deliver tangible impact:
“Unlike races that rely on general charity appeals, the Kitui Green Run ties participation to a simple, visible outcome. Every kilometre run contributes to water capacity, created and protected in Kitui’s drylands. The race becomes a RainBank, turning sport into action communities can see, measure, and celebrate.”
Beyond environmental advocacy, the event also aims to position Kitui as a destination for sports tourism, opening up the region to both local and international athletes.
The run will feature elite competitors, with marathoner Mutiso serving as the brand ambassador.
A total of KSh 2.518 million in cash prize money has been set aside for winners across the different race categories.
