Potter House International School scooped most of the awards in the Tuchezeni Sports tournament which was hosted at the Runda-based school today.
The tournament which brought together different schools from
West lands Constituency featured five sports; football, taekwondo, badminton,
table tennis and ringo sports, a minority sport that is being slowly introduced
in schools.
Potter House dominated all the categories of football, both
girls and boys, from U-15 to U-9.
The hosts boys team stunned Kestrel Manor School 13-0 with
Splendor Mwendwa leading the demolition with a superb 11 goals.
The talented 13-year-old attacker, who won the man of the
match award, was unplayable with the visitors unable to contain him as he
netted his side’s goals for fun.
Speaking to Citizen digital, Mwenda expressed his delight in
scooping the MVP and leading his side to victory.
“I feel good for the win; I have worked hard to reach this
level. My development has been good and I feel I’m heading in the right
direction,” said Mwendwa, who idolizes Inter Miami star and eight-time Ballon
d’or winner Lionel Messi.
Girls’ football only saw one category staged, U-15, in which
Potter House also reigned supreme after edging Brilliant School 5-2.
Nia Kariuki was the star of the match as she netted a hat
trick which helped her side storm to victory.
“I am so happy after emerging today’s top scorer and helping
my school win the trophy. I’m looking forward to more tournaments and growing
my skills,” said Kariuki.
Kariuki, who started playing football at the age of nine,
also hopes to reach the level of Messi.
Kenya Community Centre for Learning (KCCL) on the other hand
dominated ringo sport, an unpopular sport that features players who compete
individually or in teams of 2–3 by throwing a specialized rubber ring over a
net (or rope) into the opposing team’s half-court.
The Roysambu-based school won the triples after stunning
Braeside Lavington and Kestrel Manor while Braeside Lavington won the doubles
after beating KCCL and Kestrel Manor.
Table tennis saw German School Nairobi dominate with
Friedemann Baumert scooping the U-11 category as Rafael Baumert walked away
with the U 9 prize.
Organizers of the tournament Tuchezeni Sports hailed the
winners, saying the tournament aimed at nurturing talent and popularizing
minority sports like ringo.
“We are proud of this tournament because it’s achieving its
purpose of spotting, nurturing talent and putting the minority sports on the
limelight. Some of the schools get chances to utilize such opportunities as
they lack enough playing surface due to limited space in the areas they are
established,” noted Gilbert Kiprop, Tuchezeni Sports Director.
