Police have launched a manhunt for five suspects who allegedly attempted to break into a shop in the Destiny area of Ruiru, Kiambu County, on Saturday.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Gatong’ora Police Station, who were on routine patrol, encountered the suspects as they tried to force entry into the premises. Upon spotting the police, the suspects attempted to flee in a standby vehicle.

A chase ensued, during which officers fired at the vehicle’s rear tyres, forcing it to stop. The suspects abandoned the car and escaped on foot, evading arrest.

A search of the vehicle revealed it had been fitted with false number plates. Police also recovered additional counterfeit plates, a toy pistol, two crowbars, six master keys, three rolls of suspected cannabis, and other assorted items believed to be used in criminal activities.

"The vehicle has been impounded and is currently in police custody as efforts to trace and arrest the five suspects continue," said NPS.

Meanwhile, the National Police Service has intensified operations to curb a rise in crime often witnessed during the festive season.

"Officers are conducting regular foot and mobile patrols, vehicle checks, and intelligence-led operations aimed at deterring criminal activity and ensuring public safety as people travel, shop, and celebrate," said NPS.
