Over 700 residents from Kenya’s Coastal region took part in the Standard Chartered Marathon Mombasa Satellite Run, where Elizabeth Oyengo and Elisha Kipsoi impressed with stellar performances to clinch victory in the 21 km men’s and women’s categories, respectively.

Held at Mama Ngina Waterfront, this is a satellite run for the upcoming 22nd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, set to take place on Sunday, 26th October 2025, at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi.

The Mombasa Satellite Run featured multiple race categories—the 5KM Family Fun Run, 10KM, and 21KM—giving local running enthusiasts the opportunity to be part of Kenya’s largest single-day sporting event without the need to travel to Nairobi.

Although designed as a fun run, the event was equipped with chip and timing mats to allow participants to record their official race times.

“I’m excited that today I’ve achieved my personal best time ever, which marks a big improvement for me. I’ve been training hard and look forward to participating in major races in the coming years.”  Said Elisha Kipsoi, winner of the 21 km race.

Participants in the 5KM and 10KM categories began their run at Mama Ngina Waterfront, looping around the Docks Roundabout before returning to the start line.

The 21KM runners started at Mama Ngina Waterfront, went through Fontanella roundabout, and at the intersection of Moi Avenue and Mogadishu Road before heading back to the Waterfront.

The concept of satellite runs was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when virtual marathons enabled participants to compete from different locations amid restrictions on public gatherings.

David Mwindi, Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Local Organizing Committee Chairperson, said the inclusion of satellite races was a reflection of their commitment to promoting accessible fitness and sporting opportunities across the country.

"Each year, we have seen an increase in participation, motivating us to continue hosting these community-driven events.”

The 22nd edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has attracted support from over 39 sponsors, raising a record KES million—a 32 percent increase from KES 173

million in 2024. Over 30,000 runners from 92 nationalities have registered for this year’s event, up from 27,000 participants last year.

Proceeds from the marathon will go towards Standard Chartered’s Futuremakers initiative, which empowers young people—particularly women and persons with disabilities—by equipping them with skills to learn, earn, and grow.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), which advocates for inclusive economic growth and decent work for all.

In 2024, the marathon raised KES 48 million for the program, while this year’s target is KES 75 million.

A three-year employability program worth KES 133 million, launched in 2024, also continues to equip young people with market-ready skills.

With just seven days to go, the 2025 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is shaping up to be the largest and most impactful edition yet, cementing its place as Kenya’s premier international road race.
