In a bid to enhance medical care, more than 150 healthcare professionals have undergone specialized training in minimally invasive surgical procedures at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, strengthening Nairobi County's capacity to offer advanced treatment in public health facilities.

The two-day Comprehensive Surgical Skills Workshop, held between June 19 and 20, brought together doctors, nurses, biomedical engineers and surgical residents for hands-on training in advanced laparoscopy, therapeutic endoscopy and WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet) techniques.

The training aimed to equip frontline medical personnel with modern surgical skills that improve precision during operations, reduce complications and shorten patient recovery periods.

Speaking during the workshop, surgeon Dr. Francis Kaara said the programme was designed to address skills gaps in public healthcare and expand access to modern surgical procedures.

"We want patients to benefit from quality care with shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and less invasive procedures," he said.

Minimally invasive, or keyhole, surgery has become increasingly common worldwide due to its benefits, including smaller incisions, reduced pain, lower risk of infection and quicker recovery compared to conventional surgery.

County health officials said the training is expected to increase the availability of specialized surgical services in Nairobi's public hospitals, reducing referrals and easing the burden on patients seeking advanced care.

Chief Officer for Health Facilities David Sande Oyolo said ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure, equipment and personnel training are intended to improve service delivery across county facilities.

He also disclosed that an additional facility at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is expected to be commissioned in the near future, a development expected to enhance the hospital's capacity to provide specialized treatment and training.

Mama Lucy Hospital Board Chairman Dr. Elias Meli urged the institution to continue prioritizing professional development for healthcare workers, noting that continuous training is critical to maintaining quality healthcare services.

The workshop concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants, marking another step in efforts to strengthen specialized healthcare services through continuous medical education and skills development
