Outrage after young cyclists captured performing dangerous wheelie stunts along busy highway

The undated video, which has sparked widespread concern among Kenyans and road safety advocates, highlights an escalating trend of reckless behavior that severely jeopardizes the lives of the cyclists, oncoming drivers, and nearby pedestrians.

The footage captures a pack of young cyclists taking over multi-lane roadways without wearing essential safety gear, such as helmets. 

Weaving recklessly through live traffic, oncoming passenger cars, motorbikes, and delivery couriers, the riders pull off dangerous maneuvers with little regard for standard traffic regulations or their own safety.

Visibly alarmed by the stunts, motorists can be seen slowing down abruptly, afraid of crashing into these daredevils.

In the shocking video, these young cyclists pull their front wheels high into the air, balancing precarious single-wheel rides while coasting downstream at high speeds alongside moving motor vehicles.

Several riders elevate the difficulty and danger of their wheelies by removing one hand - or both hands entirely - from the handlebars to gesture toward the camera, severely compromising their ability to steer or brake if an obstacle appears.

Riders repeatedly cross over lane markings, swerving directly in front of approaching cars and vans.

In other shocking instances, some of the cyclists are seen standing fully upright on their pedals or rear axle pegs while lifting the front frame, dramatically shifting their center of gravity in the middle of active traffic lanes.

And in some even more extreme cases, a cyclist can be seen seated right on the handlebars, facing backwards and, at the same time, recklessly and shockingly riding forward.

At some point, they crisscross each other thoughtlessly, nearly crashing into their own members.

The viral footage has drawn sharp criticism from the public, with many Kenyans taking to social media to call for immediate intervention by traffic authorities before a fatal collision occurs. 

Road safety analysts and legal experts have also raised concerns over driver liability noting that, in the event of a catastrophic crash caused by such unpredictable stunts, motorists can still face lengthy legal disputes and massive third-party compensation claims.

"This is not bike life. This is recklessness. Parks should be opened for this cool-looking nonsense. But then again, that’s why Kenya needs spaces! This isn’t nice or whatever nonsense these idots were doing," James Nyaga wrote on X.

Someone else wrote, "I get it - we don’t have enough spaces for recreational activities and in this case no cycling lanes. But, why risk death or permanent disability? More so in KE that has dilapidated healthcare and little protection for people living with disabilities? As a cyclist, I can confirm that this is recklessness. There's nothing cool about what these cyclists are doing here."

On his part, X user @Kiprotich_M said: "This is pure madness! One slight mistake or a brake failure and a motorist will be blamed for ruining a child’s life. NTSA and @KeNHAKenya need to clamp down on this immediately before we record a tragedy."

Reacting from a legal perspective, King'ori Mwita wrote: "If a driver hits one of these boys who swerves into their lane, standard third-party insurance won't even cover the catastrophic personal injury claims. Motorists are left exposed due to sheer reckless behavior from pedestrians and cyclists."

Under Kenya's Traffic Act (Cap 403), cyclists are legally required to obey standard road safety regulations, refrain from reckless riding, and avoid endangering other road users. Violations can result in severe fines or impoundment.

Road safety advocates and motorists are now urging the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service to step up patrols in urban areas, enforce helmet mandates, and hold reckless riders accountable before a fatal accident occurs.
