According to her mother, Sharon Odhiambo, they were returning home from church when the girl came into contact with a live power cable running from a kiosk located along the roadside.
Odhiambo said she had briefly left her daughter waiting near the kiosk as she went to buy food items at a nearby market when the incident occurred.
The girl sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Awendo Sub-County Hospital.
The mother has reported the incident to Awendo Police Station and is calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Area village elder Alexander Ochieng said similar electrocution incidents have been reported in the area in the recent past, raising concerns over public safety.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who are demanding action against the trader if found culpable.
Awendo Small Traders Association Chairperson Bernard Odhiambo and the head of security for Awendo Sub-County boda boda riders alleged that illegal electricity connections may be behind the recurring incidents.
They have urged Kenya Power to crack down on illegal power connections in Awendo Town to prevent further injuries and possible loss of life.
