Boxing fans were treated to a thrilling night of action on Friday night as George Onyango and Benjamin Mchunguzi headlined the latest edition of the coveted monthly boxing event, “Nightmare in Nairobi,” held at Masshouse Arena.

The event attracted a packed crowd and delivered an action-filled fight card that showcased some of the region’s finest boxing talent. Fans witnessed a series of explosive bouts throughout the evening, further cementing the event’s growing reputation as one of Kenya’s premier combat sports showcases.

The opening fight card featured Brian Acholo against Mlati in the welterweight division, while seven-time champion Abdi Beshr faced Edbilious Respectious in the super flyweight category. Other exciting matchups included Arijan Goricki versus Hassan Ndonga in the featherweight division, Sam Kogluk against Otieno Owenge in the super middleweight class, and Martin Achebi taking on Mubaraka Sseguya in another welterweight contest.

Beyond the boxing action, the event also entertained fans with a performance by Kenyan rap sensation Khaligraph Jones, adding to the electric atmosphere inside the arena.

Speaking after his victory, super flyweight winner Abdi Beshr credited his experience and endurance for helping him overcome his opponent.

“I have the experience and I have the speed to last long in the ring,” said Beshr. “My opponent had more power but he didn’t have as much experience to last the full fight.”

Marvin Obuya, Head of Boxing at Kalakoda Promotions, praised the overwhelming support from fans, saying the turnout continues to inspire organizers.

“The best part of putting this event together is how the fans turn up for the fights,” said Obuya. “I think that’s the best thing and it shows the love that the people have for the sport.”

Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) Chairman Reuben Ndolo emphasised the importance of boxing in creating opportunities for young people.

“At the end of the day, our young kids who don’t have jobs are the ones we want to benefit and have a good living,” Ndolo said. “That’s why we are working hard day and night to make sure boxing in Kenya comes back to where it used to be.”

The headline clash between George Onyango and Tanzanian fighter Benjamin Mchunguzi lived up to expectations and kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout all 10 rounds. Heavy punches were exchanged from the opening bell, with both fighters displaying immense resilience and determination.

Despite having a shorter arm reach, Mchunguzi mounted a spirited challenge and came alive during the final four rounds, showing remarkable endurance and refusing to back down. However, Onyango’s composure, technique, and consistency ultimately earned him victory in front of an energised crowd and impressed the judge’s ringside.

The win crowned George Onyango as the king of the super welterweight division in East and Central Africa, marking a major milestone in his boxing career.

With yet another successful edition of “Nightmare in Nairobi,” boxing fans will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting future Kalakoda Promotions events, not only for the entertainment but also for their growing role in revitalising and developing boxing in Kenya.
