One person has died
while four others including a police officer are currently hospitalized at
Sigowet Sub County hospital in Sigowet/Soin sub-county after a violent
clash between two communities at Sondu
in the border of Kericho and Kisumu counties.
According to one of the
Sigowet Sub County hospital staff who spoke on condition of anonymity, the
deceased was stabbed in the neck before being hacked on his head during the
confrontation.
He said two others
were shot with arrows and rushed to the hospital with arrows lodged in their
bodies.
A senior police
officer attached to Sondu Police Station sustained injuries after being hit
with a stone by the protesters.
The clash happened
after protesters who were participating in the 'Tumechoka' Maandamano from the Kisumu side crossed the border and entered Kericho County territory where they began vandalizing and looting businesses.
They were repulsed by
police officers who had been deployed to the trading center but were
overwhelmed, forcing the youth from the other side to arm themselves with bows
and arrows and started repulsing their neighbors.
In the process, the
deceased was caught up in the melee and was stabbed and hacked before being
rescued and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival at
the hospital.
At the moment, one of
the men who had an arrow lodged in his back is currently being operated on at
the theatre.
Tension is high in
Sondu as security officers have been beefed up to restore peace.
