A 60-year-old man was killed while a senior police officer is fighting for his life, following a brazen daylight bandit attack in Meru County.

The violence erupted in Mutuati Sub-County after heavily armed bandits raided Leeta Village, sparking a fierce gun battle with security officers.

According to police at Kiolo Police Station, during the Tuesday afternoon attack, preliminary reports indicate that an unknown number of armed bandits stormed the village and made away with 32 goats and four cattle.

The situation turned tragic when 60-year-old Reuben Kibaara, who was on his way to his farm, reportedly came face-to-face with the attackers. The bandits shot him dead on the spot.

Following a distress call, police officers and National Police Reservists launched an operation to pursue the criminals and secure the area. Kibaara's body was later moved to the Nyambene Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Moments later, the security team caught up with the fleeing bandits, leading to a fierce exchange of fire. During the confrontation, Chief Inspector Benson Mainga was shot in the left shoulder, with the bullet exiting through his chest.

The injured officer was rushed to Mutuati Sub-County Hospital, where doctors stabilised him before referring him to Kiirua Mission Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police say they have intensified operations and are still pursuing the armed bandits, who are believed to have retreated to hideouts within parts of Meru and the neighbouring areas.
