Motorists and passengers spent over 10 hours stranded in a snarl-up along the Mwea-Embu highway, Kirinya County, from Saturday evening after a road accident.

The gridlock began at around 5:30pm after two vehicles collided head-on at Difathas area, killing one passenger on the spot and three others were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Confirming the incident, Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal said that the victims were rushed to hospital and the deceased’s body moved to the mortuary before traffic started.

He added that the traffic was worsened by overlapping drivers and heavy rain.

“My officers have spent the whole night doing everything possible to clear the jam,” he said.

The police boss urged road users to follow traffic rules, adding that vehicles began moving slowly at around 5am on Sunday.

According to residents led by Charles Chomba, motorists began overlapping immediately after the accident. and the road was rendered impassable after 7pm.

Drivers and passengers, some with children, spent the entire night on the road.

“It took me over 10 hours to reach home,” said John Kabue, one of the affected motorists.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed concern over continuous road accidents along the busy highway, urging the government to upgrade the road into a dual carriageway to reduce crashes and ease congestion.

The vehicles involved in the crash have been towed to Wang’uru Police Station.
