Okutoyi, Shah bag silver at World University Games

The duo’s remarkable journey to the final marked a historic first for Kenya at the global university sports stage.

Despite falling 6-3, 6-3 to Japan’s formidable pair of Natsuki Yoshimoto and Jay Dylan Hara Friend in the gold medal match, the Kenyan pair showcased tenacity and skill throughout the tournament.

Their semi-final victory over Portugal’s De Liborio Garcia and Araujo (7-6, 6-3) was a statement performance that stunned many and underlined Kenya’s growing stature in global tennis.

Okutoyi, a two-time African Games champion and Auburn University student-athlete, also impressed in the singles competition, progressing to the Round of 16 before bowing out to India’s Vaishnavi Adkar (6-3, 6-4).

She had earlier defeated Thailand’s Lidia Podgorichani (6-2, 6-2) in the opening round.

Meanwhile, Kael Shah exited the men’s singles in the first round after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Italy’s Fabio De Michele.

Despite the early exit, Shah rebounded superbly in doubles, forming a solid partnership with Okutoyi that carried Kenya to the final.

Their silver finish adds a shining chapter to Kenya’s tennis achievements, boosting morale ahead of Okutoyi next assignment at the Billie Jean King Cup in Namibia from August 4–11.

The performance also spotlights Kenya’s emerging dominance in African tennis, and reinforces the importance of investing in youth talent, especially in global multi-sport events such as the FISU Games, which aim to bridge university sport and elite competition.
