Oburu steps down as Senate energy committee chair, Senator Kisang takes over

Oginga, the Siaya Senator and ODM party leader, cited circumstances "beyond his control" as the reason for stepping down, though he moved quickly to clarify that his departure was entirely voluntary and without coercion.

"The reasons why I am vacating are beyond my own self control. I have resigned. Nobody should say that I have been removed," Oginga said, emphasizing that the transition had proceeded peacefully and without controversy.

The veteran legislator's clarification suggests some speculation had circulated about the nature of his exit. His insistence on owning the decision underscores the political sensitivity that often surrounds high-profile committee resignations in Kenya's bicameral legislature.

Significantly, Oginga has retained his seat on the Energy Committee despite relinquishing the chair, positioning himself as a continuing presence on the panel. His statement framed the leadership change as part of the committee's normal evolution rather than a personal setback.

"This was a peaceful transfer, and whoever you elect will peacefully take over. I thank everyone once again," he added.

Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla has been elected as the committee's new vice chairperson, succeeding Kisang who previously held that deputy position. The dual leadership transition has reshaped the committee's top structure entirely.

Both incoming leaders emphasized accessibility and collaborative governance during their inaugural remarks. Kisang acknowledged the scale of the responsibility, noting that he was stepping into "very big shoes" while pledging to draw on the committee's collective expertise to advance Kenya's energy access agenda.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank members of this committee for having confidence in me and electing me as the chair. I am taking over from ODM party leader whose shoes are very big. We are going to use your guidance as our patron to ensure our people get electricity," Kisang said.

Ogolla similarly signaled a consensus-driven approach to her new role, expressing gratitude to both the ODM leadership and her fellow committee members for the opportunity to serve in a senior capacity.

"I want to thank the party leader for holding our hands and members of this committee for giving me this chance," she said.

The Energy Committee carries substantial influence over Kenya's electricity policy, infrastructure development, and regulatory oversight of the sector.
