Nyeri Governor Kahiga accuses DG's driver of using county vehicle to ferry women at night

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has raised questions over the alleged use of an official county government vehicle, claiming that a driver attached to his deputy David Kinaniri has been using it to ferry women at night.

Kahiga said he spotted the vehicle moving around Nyeri town during post-official hours between 11pm and midnight and decided to follow it.

The Governor claimed that the vehicle stopped near a market, where several women allegedly boarded before being driven to different locations.

Kahiga said he confronted DG Kinaniri over the use of the vehicle, but the Deputy Governor told him he was not aware that the car was being used outside official duties.

The Nyeri County boss also questioned the vehicle’s fuel consumption, saying he had initially attributed the increased use of fuel to the Deputy Governor’s political activities.

“I was driving at around 11, 12 midnight hapo then naona gari yetu inadriviwa ikisimamishwa Wendo. Warembo wanatoka wanaingia, wengine wanaingizwa huko. Nikauliza DG; yeye anasema hata hajui maneno hayo,” he said.

“Aliwabeba akaanza kwenda akiwadrop kila mtu; huyu hapa, mwingine pale… Mimi nafikiria mafuta mingi inatumika, DG akifanya campaigns kumbe ni warembo.”

The claims come at a time when the government is stepping up oversight of official vehicles.

In August 2026, the government announced plans to introduce a real-time tracking system for government vehicles, capable of monitoring details including whether the authorised driver is behind the wheel, fuel consumption, distance travelled and vehicle maintenance history.
