Nyamweya urges FIFA and CAF to institute caretaker committee to 'save' Kenyan football

As lingering legal disputes paralyse the local game, the former FKF supremo has issued an urgent plea for high-level intervention to break the gridlock.

In a statement, Nyamweya told FIFA and CAF that football in Kenya is at a standstill under the leadership of FKF President Hussein Mohammed, and his leadership has become completely untenable.

He called for the immediate establishment of an independent caretaker or normalisation committee to steady the sport.

The urgent request comes at a critical juncture, as the Harambee Stars gear up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, and with Kenya preparing to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Nyamweya warned that the lingering instability threatens to derail player fitness, disrupt national team preparations, and undermine grassroots football.

“I write this appeal with a heavy heart, as former President of Football Kenya Federation and as a Kenyan who loves football, and who is deeply worried that we are about to embarrass ourselves before the entire continent,” Nyamweya stated in the letter.

He says the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations presents a historic opportunity for Kenya but questions how the country will successfully prepare to host the tournament amid the current challenges facing local football.

Nyamweya accuses the current FKF leadership under President Hussein Mohammed of losing the confidence of sections of the football fraternity and describes the leadership as untenable.

He further alleges that decisions are being made without involving other elected National Executive Committee members and accuses the federation leadership of using branch chairpersons to target elected NEC officials.

Nyamweya also alleges that branch chairpersons have no constitutional powers to remove elected NEC officials and claims that federation funds may have been used to influence resolutions against members opposed to the current leadership.

Among the other concerns raised is what Nyamweya describes as an unexplained KSh3 billion budget. He is demanding greater transparency and accountability on how the money is allocated and spent.

The former FKF president also cites ongoing court battles over football matters, arguing that the disputes have disrupted the sport and could expose Kenyan football to further challenges.

According to Nyamweya, the prolonged disputes have left leagues disorganised, affected national team preparations and slowed the growth of grassroots football.

Nyamweya says the proposed committee should comprise credible and non-partisan football stakeholders, respected former players and administrators.

Its mandate, he says, should include restoring constitutional order, ensuring transparent management of football funds, overseeing football activities and preparing the country for free, fair and credible FKF elections.

“We cannot head to AFCON 2027 with a federation in squabbles, in court, and run like a personal kiosk. The world is watching us. Let us save Kenyan football now,” Nyamweya says in his appeal.
