NTSA, counties partner to better road safety in Kenya

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has strengthened partnership with County Governments to ensure that roads across the country are safe.

Speaking during the final day of the three-day workshop for  County Transport Safety Committees (CTSC)  in Naivasha, NTSA Director-General George Njao noted that strengthened partnerships by various stakeholders will lessen carnage on Kenyan roads.

"Through Usalama Barabarani flagship, sponsored by European Union, we have partnered with six counties where there are riskier roads," said Njao.

The counties are Nairobi, Makueni, Nakuru, Kericho, Kakamega  and Kisumu which are connected by the Northern Corridor.

Njao added that county Governments have a fundamental role in supporting road safety programmes through the establishment of CTSCs.

"They form a critical link of collaboration between the National Government and County Government in management and improvement of Road Safety from the County level," he said.

The functions of CTCs include; assessing road safety challenges in their respective counties and developing county-specific road safety action plans to address the challenges.

They are also tasked with conducting road safety awareness and public education measures in liaison with the NTSA and County Government and advising on urban planning and spatial planning practices that consider vulnerable road users

CTCs likewise advise the county government on the legislative and administrative improvements needed to improve road transport and safety in their respective counties and they are also mandated to follow up on road crash victims admitted to various levels of health care in their counties.
