National Super League leaders Migori Youth were held to a goalless draw by Mombasa United in a tightly contested match at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides began cautiously, with much of the early action concentrated in midfield and few clear scoring opportunities.

Mombasa United nearly broke the deadlock around the 30-minute mark when David Mayson failed to convert a tap-in from a well-delivered pass by Jackson Watee.

Migori Youth responded almost immediately, as Geoffrey Odira unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, only for Mombasa United goalkeeper Kevin Tila to make a crucial save.

The intensity of the match grew, with Migori Youth applying pressure and forcing the hosts to defend deep.

Five minutes before halftime, play was briefly halted after clashes between fans from both sides, but order was restored by police, allowing the game to continue.

In the final moments of the first half, Kevin Okoth came close to giving Mombasa United the lead, but his effort narrowly missed the target.

The second half saw continued end-to-end action. In the 57th minute, Jackson Watee squandered a golden opportunity, sending his close-range effort over the bar after a brilliant run and cross from Fidel Omondi.

Migori Youth regained momentum, with Geoffrey Odira and Churchill Otieno both missing one-on-one chances, denied by outstanding saves from Tila, who kept Mombasa United in the contest.

In stoppage time, substitute Nehemiah Onchiri nearly snatched a late winner, but his powerful strike drifted just wide, brushing the side netting.

The match ended 0-0, leaving both Migori Youth and Mombasa United tied at the top of the table with 65 points, though Migori Youth maintain the advantage on goal difference.

Speaking after the match, Mombasa United head coach Peter Okidi expressed disappointment at not securing all three points.

“That was not the result we expected. We wanted maximum points, but we are still in contention and will build on this in the next game.”

Migori Youth head coach Sammy Otullo acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents.

“We knew we were facing a strong side in a decisive match. They understand us well and have a new coach with top-flight experience, but we gave it our best.”
