Preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are underway, with Kenya hosting the Continental Olympic Solidarity Forum in Nairobi.

The forum brought together National Olympic Committees (NOCs) from across Africa to begin planning for the next Olympic cycle. It aims to strengthen athlete development, enhance high-performance systems, and equip member countries with information on qualification pathways and support programmes available ahead of LA28.

Speaking during the forum held in Nairobi, former National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) President Paul Tergat said the meeting will help create opportunities for more athletes and sports disciplines to qualify for the Games.

"There is talent in Kenya, and we want all our sports to participate. This is the time for athletes to start preparing so that we can create an environment that allows every sport to qualify."

Tergat added that stakeholders are already working closely with the government to ensure athletes receive the funding and support needed as preparations gather momentum.

"Hosting this forum is important because it raises our profile. We are working closely with the government and the ministry, who will support us with funding as we prepare for future competitions."

Athletics Kenya Youth Development Director Barnaba Korir said early planning will be critical in helping African nations engage with LA28 organisers and address potential challenges well before the Games.

The forum brings together different members and stakeholders to help us plan early. This allows us to engage effectively with the LA28 organisers and avoid challenges such as visa issues."

Korir also urged sports federations to improve performance standards in order to secure more qualification slots at future Olympic Games.

"The number of slots allocated to Kenya is limited because our performance levels are low. We need to improve our performance, and once we do, the number of qualification slots will increase."

The forum is focusing on athlete development, high-performance systems, sports governance, strategic partnerships, and expanding participation across different sports as Africa begins its journey towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
