The deceased, identified as 55-year-old George Wanjohi Kimani, is described by authorities as a notorious and seasoned car theft suspect linked to multiple investigations.
Police say the operation began when officers intercepted a stolen Toyota Vitz at a Shell petrol station along Thika Road in Juja. Instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly sped off, triggering a pursuit that stretched several kilometres.
Witnesses reported that officers shot at the vehicle’s tyres in an attempt to stop it, but the driver continued on rims for nearly three kilometres towards the Muigai Inn area in Juja Farm before the chase came to an end.
The pursuit escalated into a gunfire exchange, during which the suspect was fatally shot.
Police recovered a mini-pistol from the vehicle, along with several rounds of ammunition. Authorities say the weapon is commonly associated with close-range criminal activity due to its concealable size.
Juja Sub-County Police Commander Isaac Kombo said the vehicle was fitted with registration plates KBU 988E, which are believed to belong to a different vehicle. Investigations are ongoing to establish the rightful ownership of the car through chassis number verification.
Police further indicated that the deceased had previously been flagged as a person of interest in ongoing investigations targeting a broader vehicle theft syndicate operating under a multi-agency task force.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending further forensic and identification procedures as detectives continue with investigations.
