NOC-K backs Malkia Strikers in LA 2028 Olympic qualification bid

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Malkia Strikers as they pursue qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

NOC-K President Shadrack Maluki says the committee will provide the necessary support to help the national women’s volleyball team navigate the remaining qualification pathway and secure a place at the Games.

The commitment comes after Kenya missed out on Africa’s direct Olympic ticket following a 3-0 defeat to Egypt in the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship final at Kasarani Indoor Arena. Egypt claimed the continental title and the sole African berth to Los Angeles.

Despite the setback, Maluki says the defeat will not derail Kenya’s Olympic ambitions, with NOC-K determined to support teams and athletes capable of representing the country at the highest level.

“The result in the CAVB final is disappointing, but it does not change our objective. We remain committed to supporting the Malkia Strikers as they pursue Olympic qualification,” Maluki said.

The Malkia Strikers will now regroup and focus on the remaining Olympic qualification opportunities, with sustained preparation and strong international competition expected to be key to their campaign.

Kenya had reached the CAVB final unbeaten and secured qualification for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup before losing to Egypt.

NOC-K has already said it wants to broaden Kenya’s Olympic medal prospects beyond athletics, with preparations for the Los Angeles Games beginning well ahead of the 2028 event.

For the Malkia Strikers, the challenge now is to address the shortcomings exposed in the final, build on their strong tournament run and keep their Olympic dream alive.
