The National Liberal Party (NLP) and the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) have unveiled a joint nationwide citizen engagement initiative, signalling deeper collaboration between the two liberal parties as efforts to consolidate Kenya’s emerging opposition movement gain momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The commitment was reached during a consultative meeting held at PLP headquarters, Liberation House, bringing together senior officials from both parties. The NLP delegation was led by Party Leader Augustus Kyalo Muli, Chairman Teddy Kenyatta, and Secretary General Omondi K’Oyoo, while PLP was represented by Party Leader Martha Karua and Secretary General Asha Bashir.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the parties said Kenya’s most pressing socio-economic challenges—including rising youth unemployment and the increasing cost of living—require direct engagement with citizens to develop responsive and people-centred solutions.

To advance this agenda, the two parties announced the formation of a Joint Technical Committee tasked with developing a framework for structured nationwide consultations. They also tabled a collaboration document advocating rules-based and issue-driven politics for consideration by their respective party organs.

As part of the partnership, NLP and PLP will roll out regional dialogue forums across the country, with a deliberate focus on young people, women, and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The consultations are expected to gather citizen priorities and policy proposals that could inform the opposition’s agenda heading into the 2027 elections.

The partnership comes amid growing efforts by opposition leaders to build a united political front. Muli has recently intensified calls for opposition cohesion, including outreach to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka aimed at fostering unity within the Ukambani region and the broader opposition coalition.

He has consistently argued that a fragmented Ukambani voting bloc risks political marginalization, while a united front could leverage the region’s estimated two million votes to exert significant influence in the next electoral cycle.

By combining grassroots citizen engagement with broader opposition unity efforts, NLP and PLP are positioning themselves as key players in the formation of a wider coalition that could reshape Kenya’s political landscape ahead of 2027.

The two parties reaffirmed their commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing that all Kenyans must have a voice in shaping the country’s future and determining the priorities of the opposition movement.
