NCIC Summons Turkana South MP John Ariko over hate speech

This follows investigations into remarks made by the MP at the Kaputir location in Kapurir Ward, Turkana South Constituency on September 2, 2026. Ariko allegedly made remarks concerning relations between Pokot and Turkana communities over security, livestock raids and the sharing of benefits from the Lokichar Oil Basin.

Ariko allegedly used derogatory language while in the meeting referring to members of the Pokot community as “fools”.

“Turkanas are rational, not fools like Pokots. Pokots are fools,” the summon quotes. 

Ariko is also quoted in the statement questioning whether the Pokot community had any land in the Lokichar Oil Basin.

“Do they have any land in Lokichar Oil Basin? They are just like any other citizen who is not claiming anything.” 

Ariko is required to appear before the Commission on September 29, 2026 for a cohesion inquiry.

The commission warned that failure to appear in person will lead to an arrest.
