Nairobi Finance boss Kerich handed three-month jail term for contempt

The court declined an application by Kerich's lawyers to suspend the sentence pending the hearing of fresh applications, and directed that he present himself to the relevant authorities for committal to Industrial Area Prison.
The judge warned that should Kerich fail to surrender, police should arrest him immediately and that he would be treated as a fugitive from justice.
Kerich's legal team had argued that he was a law-abiding citizen who had not absconded and was available to appear before the court whenever required.
They further told the court that he was no longer the substantive County Executive Committee Member for Finance, having left the position on June 5, 2026.
The defence also said an application had been filed seeking to purge the contempt findings.
But the judge ruled that the first issue before the court was to formally validate the applications filed by Kerich's new legal team before any other arguments could be considered, noting that the court was fully aware of the history of the matter, having handled the case from its inception.
The applications will be heard on July 29, 2026, though the court declined to suspend the jail term in the meantime.
The contempt proceedings arose from Kerich's failure to comply with earlier court orders, leading to his conviction and the three-month custodial sentence.
