Nairobi County doubles Ruai sewer plant capacity to boost wastewater treatment

The county also announced plans to expand the Kariobangi Sewer Treatment Plant from 30,000 cubic metres to 90,000 cubic metres per day, increasing Nairobi's capacity to manage rising wastewater volumes as the city's population grows.

Governor Sakaja Johnson said the expanded facilities are intended to support the city's growing demand for sewer services and reduce the discharge of untreated sewage into rivers and other water bodies.

"Nairobi is a growing city that now hosts more than seven million people during the day and over five million at night. It is paramount that we expand our treatment capacity, and that is exactly what we have achieved through the efforts of our teams in collaboration with the National Government," he said.

According to the governor, the increased treatment capacity at Ruai and the planned expansion of Kariobangi will help process more wastewater and curb illegal sewer discharges that have contributed to pollution of Nairobi's rivers.

The developments come as the county government and the National Government implement a 54-kilometre trunk sewer project along the Nairobi River corridor.

Sakaja said the new sewer network is expected to eliminate illegal sewer connections that discharge waste directly into the river while improving the city's sewer infrastructure.
