Nairobi CBD’s weekend garbage problem worry residents

Many of those raising concern are workers, shoppers, traders, commuters and visitors to the capital.

People are constantly worried at the poor state of hygienic in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

“The garbage is everywhere on the streets and pavements. The county should employ more sweepers to clean on weekends,” said Henry Wanjohi, a trade in Nairobi.

“On Saturdays and Sundays, you will find sections of the CBD littered with plastic bottles, food wrappers, empty bottles, sheets of old papers, discarded packaging and sacks of household and commercial waste.

Residents have reported large heaps of garbage in various streets, including at the intersection of Mfangano Street and Hakati Road on weekends and Mondays.

The waste often spills onto the roads and pavements.

Hawkers and traders have complained of strong smells that make operating business in the area quite unpleasant take advantage of the quieter weekend environment to dump waste.

“The Nairobi County government need to engage hygiene officers and sweepers to monitor and clean the capital,” said Kenneth Oluoch, a resident of Nairobi.

Oluoch added that nobody wants to operate a business next to rotting garbage.

The bad smell can easily drive customers away, while rodents, flies and pests can be attracted to food and other waste.

People who live and work in the CBD have been asked to work together to protect the city environment by being responsible.
