NACADA strengthens partnership with Kenya Scouts to curb youth drug abuse

The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has strengthened its partnership with the Kenya Scouts Association (KSA) in a renewed effort to combat alcohol and drug abuse among young people by leveraging the Scouts movement to promote discipline, leadership and resilience against substance use.

The Authority announced the renewed collaboration during the 2026 Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions at the Kenya Scouts Association Headquarters, Rowallan Scouts Camp in Nairobi, where NACADA Board Chair Dr. Stephen Mairori urged Scouts to become champions of a drug-free Kenya by making responsible choices and positively influencing their peers.

Addressing hundreds of Scouts, Scout leaders, teachers and government officials, Dr. Mairori said the Scouting movement remains one of the country's most effective platforms for nurturing discipline, integrity, leadership and service—values that help shield young people from the risks of alcohol and drug abuse.

"The Kenya Scouts Association has, for generations, nurtured disciplined, responsible and patriotic young people. These are the same values that protect our youth from the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse. Prevention begins by empowering young people with the right information, positive role models and opportunities to develop their full potential," he said.

He warned that alcohol and drug abuse continues to threaten the health, education and future productivity of many young people, underscoring the need to strengthen preventive interventions through partnerships with youth-focused organisations.

"Leadership begins with personal choices. Every decision you make today shapes the person you will become tomorrow. I encourage every Scout to choose purpose over peer pressure and become a champion for a drug-free Kenya," Dr. Mairori added.

As part of the engagement, NACADA officers conducted preventive education sessions, held interactive discussions and distributed information, education and communication materials to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse among the participants.

The Authority also commended Scout leaders, teachers and parents for their continued mentorship, noting that strong family and community support remains one of the most effective safeguards against substance use among adolescents.

The Regional Inter-Patrol Competitions bring together Scouts from across the country to showcase leadership, teamwork, discipline and practical skills while promoting patriotism and personal development.

NACADA said it will continue working closely with the Kenya Scouts Association and other youth organisations to expand evidence-based prevention programmes that empower young people to make informed, healthy and responsible life choices. The partnership forms part of the Authority's broader strategy to utilise established youth platforms in building resilient communities and advancing the national fight against alcohol and drug abuse among children and young people.
