Murang’a Seal Lionesses continued their promising start to the Women’s National Super League (WNSL) season after holding Bandari Queens to a 1-1 draw at Mbaraki Sports Ground in Mombasa on Sunday.

Marianah Nakato gave the hosts the lead in the 21st minute, heading home an Idah Odhiambo cross to beat Murang’a Seal goalkeeper Rebecca Kamau.

The visitors gradually grew into the contest, with Rosemary Ooko forcing Bandari Queens goalkeeper Judith Omondi into a save that resulted in a corner. A minute later, Stella Nekesa found space behind the hosts’ defence but failed to direct her effort on target.

Bandari Queens went into the break with a 1-0 advantage and looked to extend their lead in the second half.

In the 78th minute, Agnes Olesi came close to doubling the hosts’ advantage with a powerful free-kick from about 30 yards, but her effort struck the crossbar.

The visitors were rewarded for their persistence seven minutes from time when Tecra Wayua capitalised on a defensive mix-up between the Bandari Queens defenders and goalkeeper to score the equaliser, looping the ball over the advancing keeper.

Murang’a Seal Lionesses then withstood late pressure from the hosts to secure a valuable away point, leaving Bandari Queens frustrated after failing to convert their chances.

Speaking after the match, Bandari Queens head coach Jonathan Maraga Washe expressed disappointment with the result but remained optimistic about his team’s prospects.

“We pushed hard for a win, but we did not achieve it. We missed some of our key players who are out injured, but I am sure we will rise again,” said Washe.

His Murang’a Seal counterpart, Austin Okunya, welcomed the draw, saying his team had prepared well despite having limited information about their opponents.

“We played well and expected a positive result because we prepared thoroughly. We did not know much about how they play, so we focused on our strengths and ball possession, and it worked for us,” said Okunya.

Bandari Queens began their campaign with a victory over Diani Queens before suffering a defeat against neighbouring Kenya Navy. The draw against Murang’a Seal Lionesses leave.
