The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is seeking deeper cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to strengthen cross-border corruption investigations and improve the recovery and protection of public resources.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud held talks with
UNODC Executive Director Dr Monica Juma in Vienna, Austria, on October 16,
2026, focusing on law enforcement capacity, forensic technology and mutual
legal assistance across Eastern Africa.
The meeting comes as anti-corruption agencies face the
challenge of pursuing economic crimes that extend beyond national borders,
requiring closer collaboration and access to specialised investigative tools.
During the meeting, Mohamud acknowledged UNODC's support to
the commission through the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery in
Kenya (PLEAD) and the UNODC Africa Hub based in Nairobi.
He called for sustained technical cooperation and joint
capacity-building initiatives to strengthen the commission's institutional
capacity.
The EACC chief also briefed Juma on the establishment of the
Africa Anti-Corruption Studies and Research Centre (CEREAC) in Nairobi, seeking
UNODC's support for its research, policy development and capacity-building
programmes.
The proposed collaboration is expected to draw on UNODC's
international anti-corruption expertise and tools to strengthen responses to
corruption and economic crime at both national and regional levels.
The engagement also provides a platform for the two
institutions to explore additional areas of cooperation, particularly in
strengthening investigations and improving coordination in tackling
transnational financial crimes.
EACC has maintained that strategic partnerships remain
central to its efforts to promote accountability, safeguard public resources
and uphold the rule of law.
