The county government of Murang’a and Early Childhood Development
Education (ECDE) teachers have reached an agreement on improved pay and
benefits, paving the way for normal learning to resume.
The teachers had downed tools last week demanding better
salaries, improved working terms, and permanent pensionable positions, arguing
their pay had remained stagnant amid rising living costs.
On Saturday, Governor Irungu Kang’ata held a consultative
meeting to present a new deal factored into the 2026/2027 budget.
Murang’a’s CECM for Finance, Prof. Kiarie Mwaura announced a
four-year plan to align earnings with Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC)
rates.
Starting July 2026, degree holders will get a Ksh.10,000
monthly raise, diploma holders Ksh.6,000, and certificate holders Ksh.4,000 —
with annual increments until full SRC scales are met. All interns will also be
absorbed into the structure based on their qualifications.
Governor Kang’ata acknowledged the teachers’ vital role in
shaping young minds, saying the county remains committed to their welfare
within available resources.
Spokesperson Peris Mwangi confirmed they will call off the
strike and return to work, while discussions continue on remaining grievances
including permanent employment terms.
Charity Njoki, a teacher since 2016, noted many earned just Ksh.17,000
monthly for years. “This is a milestone we have waited for,” she said.
The deal now restores hope for thousands of learners as
classes resume across Murang’a.
