A torrential storm that recently hit Muhuru Bay in Nyatike Constituency, Migori County, has left a trail of distraction.

Wiser Girls, a secondary school that supports vulnerable girls, was left destroyed following the storm.

Piles of uprooted trees, tangled iron sheets and cracked walls told only half the story.

“The incident happened this week, heavy rains accompanied by very strong winds blew off roofs and tore down the school perimeter wall. I thank God that not a single student was injured in the incident,” Wiser Girls Principal Violet Singoei told Citizen Digital.

Almost the entire perimeter wall was flattened to the ground, leaving the compound exposed.

The evening deluge also destroyed the roofing trusses of four classrooms, plucking them from the walls.

“Four big classrooms meant to house up to 50 learners were seriously damaged, the roofs and the walls, but they can still be repaired. Some trees fell on buildings, one dormitory, the dining hall, administration block, guest house and teachers quarter and damaged the iron sheets,” said Madam Violet.

"The furniture and the agriculture store were completely destroyed. A number of the buildings had their foundations affected. Window panes of some buildings were shuttered as well," she said.

Some solar panels were blown away tempering supply of water in the school.

According to locals, the destruction also affected electric power poles in the area.

“The affected classrooms were being used by our students as examination rooms for the ongoing KCSE exams. We have had to use alternative classrooms,” Madam Violet said – noting that the incident left the candidates shaken.

“The girls were left shocked because they had never seen anything like this. It does not help that it's happening during national examinations. In fact, one girl had to be taken to hospital after suffering from shock following the incident, but she is doing well and is back in school,” said Madam Violet.

"The girls had never witnessed anything like this," the school head explained, while surveying the destruction.

Government assessors, including the DCC and educational officials who visited the school, placed the preliminary loss at approximately Sh4 million.

The headteacher has issued an urgent plea for help.

Madam Violet said the actual estimate for repairs could go above Sh4 million, noting that the Quantity Surveyor is yet to give the actual figures.

"Wiser Girls exists to give vulnerable girls who cannot afford school fees a good shot at life and the future. In 2025, out of 53 candidates, 42 qualified for university with a mean score of 7.43, and a transition rate of 79.2%. But with our infrastructure in ruins, our very survival hangs by a thread. We need assistance to continue helping vulnerable girls,” she said.

A total of 318 vulnerable girl have joined various universities from the school – a 59.0% direct qualification rate.

“This is a good showing given the school has enrolled 539 candidates across 13 academic years. But we need help especially as we prepare to bring in Grade 10 learners,” said Madam Violet.

Obolo SDA Church, located only a short distance from the school, was not spared the wrath of mother nature. A recently built camp meeting shed had its roof violently blow off.

“The entire iron-sheet roof was plucked and supporting beams left bending to the ground,” said Obolo SDA official in charge of development Mr. Moses Rumbe.

Rumbe said he was holding a meeting at the church ground with other members when the incident happened.

Both the school and church now look to well-wishers, humanitarian agencies, and the government to help rebuild Muhuru Bay from the rubble.
