Mombasa United head coach Peter Okidi has expressed strong confidence that his side will emerge victorious in their upcoming derby clash against Mwatate United, set to be played away at Wundanyi Stadium in Taita Taveta County on Sunday 24 May.

Okidi told Citizen Digital that his team is finally beginning to show the unity and chemistry they have been searching for over the past few weeks. He explained that their recent 2-1 home victory over Nairobi City Stars has boosted morale and injected fresh belief into the squad.

" We know its a derby - we will get there prepared and am sure we will get the maximum points. Our Mentality must be positive regardless of our opponents position in the league."

Mwatate United have endured a difficult season so far and currently sit bottom of the National Super League table with 25 points. Playing at home, they will be desperate to secure all three points as they attempt to climb out of the relegation zone.

Okidi also challenged his attackers to make better use of their chances in front of goal in order to improve the team’s scoring record, while urging his defenders to remain disciplined and focused at the back.

"We have been having loopholes in our team, we have been failing in striking department something we must work on. In our last game against Nairobi City Stars we had plenty of opportunities to get more goals but we fail- we must work on that and also in our defense, we are allowing easy goals," he averred.

At the same time, Okidi reassured Mombasa United supporters that the club remains firmly on course in the race for promotion to the Kenyan Premier League next season.

" Am here to finish what coach Selebwa Started. He did a recommendable job with the players, fans and management and my promise is that we are heading to Kenya Premier League next season. My work is stamp the final nail in the coffin"

Currently, Mombasa United sit third in the league standings with 68 points, level with league leaders 3K FC and second-placed Migori Youth.

Elsewhere in this weekend’s National Super League fixtures, table-toppers 3K FC face a tough home test against fourth-placed Equity FC, while Migori Youth are set for a highly competitive showdown against league veterans Kibera Black Stars.
