Members of the National Assembly’s Committee on Environment and Lands have conducted a fact-finding visit to Kipsigon area in Mt. Elgon Constituency as part of an ongoing process to determine whether land title deeds should be issued to residents occupying what is believed to be forest land.
The delegation, led by Vice Chairperson and Kacheliba MP Titus Lotee, said the visit was intended to assess the situation on the ground before making a decision on the contested Chebiuk Phase Two settlement scheme.
Committee members noted that many residents have lived in uncertainty for years, lacking legal ownership documents and facing the constant threat of eviction.
The planned issuance of title deeds has been welcomed by locals, who argue it could bring long-awaited security of tenure.
Some residents also accused certain local leaders of exploiting the long-running land dispute to incite tensions within the community.
