Zaheer Jhanda, Member of Parliament for Nyaribari Chache constituency, has said he does not see any wrong with giving handouts to political supporters,  arguing that he does so to empower and support them.

According to MP Jhanda, dishing out money can empower small businesses and that his philanthropic actions should not be seen as an attempt to woo political support.

‘’I used to call Mama mboga and hold discussions with them where they would tell me their grievances and I would support them with the little I have.’’ Zaheer said on Spice FM.

‘’I always approached my friends in parliament and convince them to support youth groups or the church or any other small groups in my constituency,’’ Zaheer said.

He further denied using public resources to advance his monetary advances, saying that he uses his hard-earned money.

‘’When an old woman comes and I give her the one thousand shillings that will pay for her bodaboda home and also buy bread for her kids,’’ Zaheer said.

"I am giving this money from my own pocket, not government money, not from anybody's pocket. I have a salary which I earn as a Member of Parliament and I also have my own businesses."

This comes after videos of the legislator handing out Ksh.1,000 notes to a crowd in his constituency, which has attracted criticism from members of the public as many have alleged that he is misappropriating funds in the county coffers.
