Several motorists spent the night along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway after a heavy traffic buildup following a late-night accident in Kapiti Plains.

Reports indicated that the traffic disruption had been ongoing since 9pm, stretching from Malili to Machakos Junction near Konza.

The congestion was said to have begun after two trailers travelling in opposite directions collided on Thursday evening.

The impact left both lanes blocked, severely restricting movement along the highway.

By Friday morning, motorists were still facing extensive delays across the affected sections.

The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) reported that overlapping vehicles had become a major factor worsening the traffic situation.

“Kapiti Traffic Update: After last night's accident, traffic has now stretched from Malili to Machakos junction and from Athi River past Machakos junction along A109,” the association wrote.

At the time of publication, authorities had not provided official information on any injuries or fatalities or the circumstances surrounding the accident.

However, footage circulating from the scene shows one of the trailers reportedly involved in the crash badly damaged, while some reports indicated that no serious injuries were recorded.

The traffic disruption has reportedly extended well beyond the immediate accident scene, with motorists raising concerns as efforts to address the disruption continued.

Motorists approaching the Kapiti and Konza areas have been urged to exercise caution while navigating the affected section.

Additionally, drivers have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra travel time if they need to use the affected route.

The latest disruption comes amid ongoing traffic challenges along Mombasa Road, with a section of the Cabanas Eastern Bypass off-ramp temporarily closed for construction works until October 22.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is yet to speak on the matter.
