Mombasa United have appointed former Shabana FC coach Peter Okidi as their new head coach, signaling a strong push for promotion as the National Super League season nears its conclusion.

According to reports, Okidi who also serves as assistant coach of Kenya’s U-17 national team, Harambee Stars, will take charge of the team for the remaining eight league matches. Further discussions regarding a longer-term contract are expected after this period.

Speaking exclusively to Citizen Digital, the club’s Team Manager Gilbert Wesonga expressed confidence in the new appointment, citing Okidi’s vast experience in the Kenyan Premier League as a key factor.

"Coach Okidi is here with us. He has already met the playing unit and I’m sure he will finish the job started by Coach Selebwa. I’m fully confident that in the few matches we have left this season, he will guide us to become champions," observed Wesonga.

During his unveiling, Okidi embraced the challenge, making his ambitions for the club clear.

"I’m happy that Mombasa United management approached me to come here and push the team towards KPL promotion and also to become National Super League champions."

The coach emphasized his belief in the squad and his determination to deliver results.

"I am here now, and what convinced me to make this move is the talent I have seen in these players. I’m here to finish the job that was started. To our fans, this is our year we must secure promotion to the top-tier league. Expect everything from me," Okidi added.

Coach Okidi has taken over the position that was left vacant by veteran coach Gilbert Selebwa, who was dismissed following what was described as poor results.

Meanwhile, Mombasa United are set to host Migori Youth this Sunday at Mombasa Sports Club in what promises to be a decisive top-of-the-table clash. Wesonga remains optimistic following their recent 1-0 away victory against Gucha FC and is calling on fans to rally behind the team.

"Our fans, we really need your support, and I’m sure we will win and return to the top position in the league. We are psyched up after last week’s win against Gucha FC away, and we will carry that momentum into Sunday’s clash."

Currently, Mombasa United and Migori Youth are level on 64 points, with Migori holding a slight advantage on goal difference by four goals.
