The law
enforcers emerged top of the standings with 24 points—ten clear of their
nearest challengers, Nairobi County, who garnered 14 points. Nakuru County
follow in third place with 10 points.
The prestigious
event will draw over 180 elite boxers from 26 clubs across Kenya, including
standout names like the reigning Africa light-middleweight champion Bonface
Mogunde of Kenya Police who is currently unbeaten in his weight category and
Edwin Okongo of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), a gold medallist at the
All-Africa Games. L
Local stars
Kombo Mwinyifaki and Shaffi Bakari will also feature prominently in the ring.
In preparation
for the tournament, 20 top Mombasa boxers have undergone intensive training
with Franck Petitjean, a four-time French Champion and European titleholder,
and renowned physical trainer Valentino Gargiulo.
Sanctioned by
the Boxing Federation of Kenya, the event is part of the Ndondi Mashinani
initiative, a Kenya-France sports cooperation project supported by the Embassy
of France in Kenya. The program celebrates the Olympic values of respect,
tolerance, and perseverance, especially in the wake of the successful Paris
2024 Olympic Games.
The initiative focuses on strengthening the skills of boxing stakeholders in Mombasa, promoting inclusive participation, particularly among girls and women, equipping Mombasa boxing clubs with international-standard facilities and gear and preparing elite boxers from Mombasa for future Olympic qualification.
The boxing
action will culminate in a cultural treat, a live concert by Malian artists
Doucoura on Saturday evening, marking the end of three thrilling days of sport
and community celebration.
