Mombasa football stakeholders welcome SDT ruling on promotion and relegation rules

Football stakeholders in Mombasa County have welcomed the Sports Disputes Tribunal's decision to uphold the validity of the Football Kenya Federation's 2025 promotion and relegation regulations.

The ruling clears the way for three NSL teams to earn promotion to the KPL, while three top-flight sides will be relegated to the second tier.

Mombasa United, who finished third in the NSL, have consequently secured their place in next season's KPL, marking a major milestone for football in the Coast region.

FKF Mombasa chairman Alamin Ahmed Abdalla welcomed the decision, describing it as a victory for Kenyan football.

“The ruling is now out and it is a win for everybody. Mombasa United clinching a spot in the Kenyan Premier League next season is a plus for all of us, and shows how Kenyans uphold democracy. I am happy that we have promoted another team to the KPL,” said Abdalla.

Abdalla urged Kariobangi Sharks to use their relegation as motivation to rebuild.

“To our former FKF President Mwendwa, put more effort into your youth because you have the best talents. Prove that you deserve to be in the KPL, rebuild and come back stronger. Football is not enmity; football brings people together.”

Former Harambee Stars player Walter Odede also backed Mombasa United's promotion, calling for greater investment in Coast-based clubs to increase their representation in the top flight.

“We are happy that we have another Mombasa team in our KPL. I call upon all stakeholders to put more pressure and invest more in our teams so that we can get more teams into the KPL, averred Odede.

Mombasa United have already begun preparations for their KPL return, releasing 14 players and bringing in new recruits.

The club has also appointed Abdulhamid Moallin as head coach. The Tanzanian-based tactician has previously worked with Yanga, Azam FC and KMC FC, and guided Yanga to the Tanzanian Premier League title in the just-concluded season.

Former Mathare United assistant coach Muhamed Mchula will serve as his deputy, while former Bandari FC and Harambee Stars goalkeeper Wilson Oburu joins as goalkeeper trainer.
