Migori: Fisherman killed following dispute over gambling payout

Police have launched investigations into the death of a fisherman who was allegedly hacked to death by a colleague following a dispute over a gambling payout in Migori County.

Muhuru Central Location Chief Olga Raden said the suspect, identified as Tanzanian national Semeni Rongeri, and allegedly attacked the deceased, identified only as James, following a disagreement linked to a card game played several days ago.

Raden said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was angered after the deceased won the game and allegedly confronted him, leading to the fatal attack.

She said the deceased died while undergoing treatment, adding that the suspect was also attacked by a mob and sustained injuries before police intervened and rescued him.

Sumba Beach Management Unit Chairperson Mark Otieno has called on the government to regulate gambling activities, including card games, at the beach and in Muhuru Bay town, saying disputes arising from such games have led to serious consequences, including loss of life.

Otieno said it was unfortunate that a fisherman had lost his life over gambling, which he said had become increasingly common along the beaches.
