Mbagathi Hospital opens Diabetes Centre to expand specialised care

The centre will provide clinical diabetes care alongside patient education, nutrition counselling and support to help patients manage the condition on a long-term basis.

Mbagathi Hospital CEO Dr Alexander Irungu said the facility will strengthen the hospital's ability to provide comprehensive care to people living with diabetes.

The centre is the second of its kind in Kenya after a similar facility was established in Nakuru. It is expected to serve patients from Nairobi and parts of Central Kenya.

The facility has been established through the iCARE partnership between Nairobi City County, Mbagathi Hospital and pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.

Its launch comes as Mbagathi continues to expand its services as a Level 5 referral hospital, with increased capacity to handle specialised and referred cases, including chronic diseases, critical care and emergencies.

The hospital has also received modern medical equipment through the National Equipment Service Programme, supporting its diagnostic and treatment services.

The opening was attended by Danish Ambassador to Kenya Stephan Schönemann, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Health Facilities David Sande, Chief Officer for Medical Services Maryam Dahir, Novo Nordisk Middle Africa General Manager Jakop Mollerup and other health-sector officials.

The new centre adds to Mbagathi's specialised services as the hospital seeks to provide more comprehensive diabetes care closer to patients in Nairobi and surrounding counties.
