At least 72 Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) were on Friday impounded in Mombasa by a multi-agency road safety team drawn from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and Kenya police.

During the crackdown, only 17 vehicles were found to be compliant and which were later released.

According to Mombasa County Police Commander Johnson Ipara, of the non-compliant vehicles, 10 were not fitted with speed governors, 25 had various major defects while 20 were found with various minor defects.

The officer called on Saccos to ensure their vehicles are compliant and issued a stern warning against operators hiking fares.

Drivers in the area however, complained of continuous harassment from the police despite having met all the requirements.
