Mashujaa Day celebrations to be held in three Rift Valley counties - CS Murkomen

The Ministry of Interior has announced that this year's Mashujaa Day celebrations will be co-hosted by three counties: Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Uasin Gishu, in a bid to achieve national unity. 

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who chaired the 2026 Mashujaa Day National Celebrations Steering Committee meeting at Harambee House on Thursday, said the preparation process alongside the complementary activities that would take place under the theme, 'Security, Transport and Sports' were assessed.

Murkomen noted that the committee is on course to deliver sports infrastructure, roads, energy and other projects in the three counties in readiness for the week-long activities that will culminate in the Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret.  

In attendance were Principal Secretaries Dr. Raymond Omollo (Internal Security and National Administration), Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defence) and Elijah Mwangi (Sports).

Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu) and Wisely Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) as well as Nandi County CECM for Roads Eng. Robert Limo, among other government officials, were also present.

The Mashujaa Day fete, held annually on October 20, 2026, honours the heroes who fought for the country's independence.

Murkomen's announcement forms part of the government's call for inclusivity as it seeks to promote development across the country. 

During Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2026, the fete was held in a newly built 10,000-seater stadium in Wajir County.
