Marakwet West hit by landslide following heavy rains

A six-year-old girl escaped death on Friday night after her family’s house was destroyed following a landslide that hit Kasonok village in Niwai sub location, Marakwet County.

According to reports, the landslide was caused as a result of heavy rains that have been pounding the area over the past three days.

Confirming the incident area location Chief Timothy Kilimo said that the rains started at around 7pm, adding that at by 8 pm the waters destroying homesteads in the area.

Marakwet West police boss Mathews Mang’ira urged the residents to move to safer grounds in order to avoid loss of lives in the area, warning that more rain is expected in coming weeks.

The six-year-old was taken to Arror health centre for medical treatment.

Heavy rains have been pounding the country for the past two weeks causing deaths and destroying houses in most parts of the country.

According to reports, 18 people have so far been confirmed dead in Nairobi following heavy rains that have pounded the city.
