Nestled in the heart of Jomoko area along the Thika Superhighway, in Thika, is 'Mapenzi Area', a quiet spot that has become common with a wide range of revellers.

According to the residents, the spot provides a serene escape for college students, house helps out to spend their off days, photography enthusiasts and lovers.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that the place was nicknamed "Mapenzi Area”, meaning “Place of Love" – because couples love to congregate here on weekends to relax and wind down time.

Overtime, the area has gained reputation as a go-to destination for couples seeking an escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Its lush greenery, gently swaying trees and serene atmosphere provides an ideal backdrop for moments of peace and quiet.

“Many people come here for picnics and to enjoy the beautiful scenery,” says Ken Karani – a photographer in the area.

The allure of “Mapenzi Area” extends beyond romantic endeavours.

College students burdened by the pressures of academia, often flock to this serene spot during weekends to unwind and recharge.

“This area provides a perfect setting for introspection, group activities, and bonding with friends,” says Helena Chacha – a student in one of the colleges in Thika town.

Availability of affordable camera technology has empowered jobless youth in the area to turn their passion for photography into a potential means of livelihood.

“Many people come here to take pictures and capture their precious moments. I help tell their stories through pictures – and I get paid for it,” says Karani.

Although Mapenzi Area boasts an idyllic charm, it is not without its challenges. The area's growing popularity has attracted the attention of local gangs who perceive the photographers and visitors as potential ‘customers’.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that there have been isolated cases of theft and intimidation which is hurting the profile of the area.

“It would help if we have police patrolling this area every so often to enhance security,” says Winnie Akinyi.

Suggestions include increased patrol by local law enforcement officers, community initiatives to raise awareness about safety, and collaboration between photographers to promote a more secure environment.

The challenges, according to karani, has not stopped the influx of visitors.

“Mapenzi Area is a treasure trove for business people and photographers like myself. Every corner here tells a different story, and it's incredibly rewarding to capture those moments for my clients. However, the security concerns have made it a bit nerve-wracking to operate here. We are learning to strike a balance between enjoying the creative opportunities and ensuring our safety,” says Karani.

Residents wants the county government of Kiambu to address security challenges in the area to promote businesses.
