Man slapped with life imprisonment after appealing 20-year jail term for defiling 9-year-old girl

The High Court in Migori has enhanced a 20-year prison sentence to life imprisonment for a man convicted of defiling a 9-year-old girl.
Paul Otieno Ojwang was initially sentenced by a lower court to serve 20 years behind bars after being found guilty of defiling the minor in October 2022 at Ombo area in Migori County.
Unsatisfied with the verdict, Ojwang appealed the sentence, claiming it was excessively harsh. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opposed the appeal.
Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution M. Ikol Esaba argued that the 20-year sentence was too lenient considering the young age of the victim. She urged the High Court to impose a life sentence instead.
Upon reviewing the case, the High Court concurred with the prosecution and enhanced the sentence, ordering Ojwang to serve life imprisonment.
