A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of defiling a seven-year-old boy in Vivalani Village, Lungalunga Sub-County, Kwale County.

Athumani Juma was convicted on October 5, 2026, by the Msambweni Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court.

According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Juma lured the child to his house with the promise of sweets before sexually abusing him. He then threatened the boy with dire consequences if he disclosed the incident to anyone.

The threats left the child frightened but only confiding in his brothers.

The incident however made the child develop serious physical conditions which came to be noticed later by a relative who then sought an explanation.

On June 14, 2025, the boy eventually disclosed what had happened, identifying Juma, a water vendor known to him, as the person responsible for the abuse.

The matter was reported to the police, setting investigations that eventually led to Juma’s prosecution.

The suspect was apprehended by members of the public before being handed over to law enforcement officers.

Investigators subsequently worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather evidence for the case.

During the trial, five prosecution witnesses testified but the accused denied the charge, claiming that he had been framed.

However, the court dismissed his defence after finding the child’s testimony credible and consistent. The magistrate also noted that the medical evidence corroborated the boy’s account.

The court concluded that the prosecution had proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Juma to life imprisonment.

The DCI called for timely reporting of sexual offences, noting that prompt reporting gives investigators an opportunity to gather and preserve crucial evidence.

The conviction adds to efforts to hold perpetrators of sexual offences against children accountable.
