Nairobi County has expanded access to specialised kidney care following the opening of a new renal unit at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a move aimed at improving dialysis services and reducing referrals to other health facilities.

The upgraded renal unit at the Level 5 hospital in Umoja II, Embakasi West, is equipped with modern dialysis machines and staffed by a multidisciplinary nephrology team to provide specialised care for patients with kidney disease.

Announcing the opening, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the facility is expected to increase the hospital's capacity to manage patients requiring dialysis and other renal services.

"The expansion of our renal services reflects our commitment to ensuring Nairobi residents can access quality, affordable and specialised healthcare without having to travel long distances. This facility will improve treatment outcomes for patients living with kidney disease," Sakaja said.

According to the county government, the unit will provide haemodialysis, comprehensive renal care, personalised treatment plans, nutritional and lifestyle counselling, as well as psychosocial support for patients and their families.

County officials said the investment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen specialised healthcare services within public hospitals, reduce congestion at referral facilities and improve access to treatment closer to where residents live.

Hospital management has encouraged patients seeking dialysis or specialist kidney care to book appointments through the facility's dedicated Renal Unit.

The expansion adds to a series of recent infrastructure and service upgrades at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, including the enhancement of critical care services, modernisation of operating theatres, expansion of the emergency department and improved diagnostic capacity.

The county government said dialysis and specialised kidney care services at the facility are available under the Social Health Authority (SHA), a move expected to ease the financial burden on eligible patients requiring long-term treatment.
