Mama Ibado Charity opens elderly care centre to support vulnerable seniors in Isiolo

The centre, officially launched on Tuesday, is the first dedicated elderly care facility established by the charity and is designed to offer a safe and welcoming environment where older persons can access nutritious meals, medical care, counselling, social interaction and community support.

The initiative seeks to address the growing challenges facing Kenya's ageing population, including food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, social isolation and inadequate family support.

Speaking during the launch, Mama Ibado Charity President Ahmed Jibril said the centre reflects the organisation's commitment to ensuring senior citizens live with dignity and receive the care they deserve.

"The Wazee Wetu Centre is more than a building; it is a home where our senior citizens will find care, companionship, hope and the support they deserve. We believe every older person should age with dignity, and this centre represents a major step towards turning that vision into reality," said Jibril.

He noted that older persons remain custodians of society's history, culture and values and deserve to be celebrated and empowered to continue contributing to their communities.

The facility houses a medical clinic, food distribution centre, honey processing unit and administrative offices, enabling the charity to offer a range of support services under one roof while promoting sustainable livelihoods for beneficiaries.

Mama Ibado Charity Director Dr. Mohamud Said said the project demonstrates the organisation's long-term commitment to improving the welfare of older persons through sustainable community-based interventions.

"The opening of this centre underscores Mama Ibado Charity's commitment to championing the welfare of older persons through sustainable community-based interventions, advocacy and strategic partnerships," he said.

Director Dr. Amb. Amina Mohamed called on government agencies, development partners, the private sector and other stakeholders to invest more in programmes that safeguard the wellbeing of senior citizens across the country.

"We hope this centre will inspire more organisations, development partners and county governments to invest in the wellbeing of older persons. Together, we can build communities where no senior citizen is left behind and every older Kenyan can age with dignity, security and hope," she said.

Mama Ibado Charity currently runs seniors' feeding, healthcare, housing and community welfare programmes, with its activities primarily benefiting vulnerable older persons in Isiolo and Kakamega counties.
